Can you imagine the blessing that is to parents? Older parents often worry about such children. Some of them might not be capable of all the shopping, cooking and cleaning that comes with independent life. Knowing that Susie has a safe clean place to stay brings real relief to aging parents.
One of our really special organizations is Disability Resources. Disability Resources provides a caring place to live and work. This enables developmentally disabled individuals to grow to their fullest potential. Everybody needs some care. But we also need to be able to contribute to the community. These young adults relish the opportunity to have jobs and to make a difference.

As shown in the previous post, Abilene, Texas, wasn't the original "Abilene." But Abilene, Kansas copied the name too. Eric (or Nancy) Anderson tells how Abilene, Kansas got its name on the(ir) website. According to the Andersons, the name was chosen by a Kansas pioneer in 1858 using a tried and true formula for decision making. She allowed her Bible to drop open randomly and happening upon the first chapter of Luke she found a term for "city of the plains." The term is probably more accurately "Grass" but that doesn't sound quite as elegant as "city of
Actually, the Andersons mention Abilene, Texas' airport in their article but they go on to claim that the Kansas town is the "real" Abilene. So I was tickled to find that Think Baby Names (and a few other baby name sites) mentions our Texas community with no reference to the smaller Kansas freight yard. Carrying a biblical name is certainly appropriate for our Texas community since it is home to 3 colleges with connections to religious groups. Abilene Christian University (churches of Christ), Hardin-Simmons University (Baptist) and McMurry University (Methodist) began as colleges but they've grown up to be universities. The confluence of these three gives some weight to the claim that "Abilene is the buckle of the Bible Belt." How do you say "Abilene"?
I say it like I heard it with the emphasis on the first syllable. A bulene. But I've noticed that Yankees have a tendency to put the stress on the ending. Abuh LEENE. Similar tendencies affect other local communities. Think about Tuxedo. (TUX uh doh vs. tucks EE duh).Or even Colorado City (Cahl oh ray duh vs. Cahl uh rah doh). It reminds me of the question about the pronunciation of the capital of Louisiana. Is it Nahluns or New Or LEENS? Actually, the capital of Louisiana is Baton Rouge. But you knew that didn't you? By the way, according to The Handbook of Texas Online, our Abilene, Texas was named after the Kansas cattle town. |
